Many entrepreneurs fail because of personal weakness which they fail to address, or which they are even unaware of.
Unfortunately, many courses we learn in school do not teach us how to overcome our personal weakness and increase our personal power.
In this module, you will learn strategies to overcome your personal weakness. You will also learn how to identify personal weaknesses that are stopping you from reaching your full potential.
First understand that no one is without weakness.
We usually think that great achievers like presidents, religious leaders, celebrities and top athletes are super human and have no weakness. This is why we are normally shocked when we discover their vulnerabilities.
Everyone has weakness, but those of us who are wise recognize them and try to overcome these character flaws or even turn their weakness into strength. Others ignore their personal weaknesses and find themselves repeating mistakes and leading unfulfilled lives.
We shall start by identifying some common personal weakness that can ruin entrepreneurs. As we go through the list, be honest and check which ones you are vulnerable to.
Obviously, we cannot list all personal weakness, just the common ones that affect entrepreneurs.
1. Procrastination :
This trait has led to the death of many wonderful ideas and has done heavy damage to many entrepreneurs.
2. Fear :
Another weakness responsible for inaction and poor judgment. Fear is one of the most devastating of all personal weaknesses. This particular weakness is a form of personal bondage that cages many potentials and talents. There are many kinds of fear, like fear of rejection, fear of the unknown, etc.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”
The things you fear become monsters in your head. The more you allow them to control you, the larger they become.
3. Inordinate love of money:
Almost everyone likes money or at least the good life, but inordinate love of money has pulled down many organizations and individuals. When an entrepreneur falls into this trap, he/she is no longer interested in the service or product being delivered, but in the money, and this can have disastrous consequences for the business.
4. Impatience and Lack of consistency:
Business takes long to succeed, many entrepreneurs lacks consistency and gives up once they are not seeing immediate result.
5. Not taking criticism well:
This has destroyed many leaders, or made them rule terribly. It also keeps poor people from learning and growing.
6. Does not like conflict :
This personal weakness makes an entrepreneur weak, because conflict is inevitable in entrepreneurship.
7. Sex :
This has ruined many business leaders and top achievers. Sex is a powerful natural stimulus, but when left unchecked, becomes a raging fire that can destroy careers.
8. Love of Power:
Like money, power in itself is not bad, but love of power is destructive. A person in the grip of this weakness, will do anything to attain power, even if it means sabotaging good people, destroying other people with good initiative, toxic office politics, backstabbing, character assassination and worse.
9. Substance Abuse:
Alcohol and hard drugs can quickly destroy any career. Once in the grip of this addiction, professional help need to be sought. It is better to avoid these substances in the first place.
10. Temperamental and low emotional IQ :
Low emotional IQ alienates entrepreneurs from people who could help them succeed. Some entrepreneurs treat their workers as slaves and are completely insensitive to their feelings.
10 TECHNIQUES FOR OVERCOMING YOUR PERSONAL WEAKNESS
Weaknesses are normal and natural—we all have them. The only time a weakness is fatal to your entrepreneurial career is when you don’t tackle it.
Use the following techniques to overcome your weakness.
1. IDENTIFY YOUR WEAKNESS AND ADMIT IT.
Think of five things that didn't go the way you wanted. Write them down if you like. Then ask yourself this question: Is there a common element among them? Most of us are tripped up by the same weaknesses again and again.
Being reminded of our weaknesses is unpleasant, but if you can’t admit your weakness, you can’t address it.
2. SEEK ADVICE AND GUIDANCE FROM OTHERS.
Most times, we have blind spots. We may not be able to pinpoint our weakness or even when we do, we may not recognize how it affects us, or those around us.
It is time for a reality check. Ask people you know and trust, to help you identify your weakness and how it’s affecting you. When they do, try not to be upset — assuming, of course, that they speak in good faith and are attempting to help. Be humble, as an old saying goes, "Wounds from a friend can be trusted."
3. INVOLVE YOUR ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER
When we started this program, we asked you to get an accountability partner. This is one of the important reasons why you need an accountability partner.
Your accountability partner is not like your boss, it is simply someone you report to, and who can hold you accountable for actions you intend to take. They are also more than friends because they hold you to your work commitments and motivate you to get things done.
The simple pressure of reporting to someone is often enough to help us break out of natural weaknesses. You need to get someone you absolutely trust, because you will have to expose your vulnerable part to him/her.
If you cannot trust your accountability partner with your vulnerabilities, please change your partner. You will take your partner into confidence, tell him/her the habit/weakness you are trying to overcome, and the steps you plan to take to overcome it.
Then both of you will agree on how your accountability partner will monitor your progress.
4. USE YOUR STRENGTH TO OVERCOME YOUR WEAKNESS
Just as we all have weakness, we also have unique strengths. An effective way to overcome a weakness is to find a new way to approach it that utilizes one of your core strengths.
For example, If your weakness is not been consistent for a long period of time, but you are good at short term project, then learn to break long term projects into smaller chunks, and focus only on one chunk at a time.
Again, let’s say your weakness is networking. However, two of your strengths are being methodical and conscientious. You could look for a way to approach networking that uses your conscientiousness. Your solution could be something like methodically following up with a thank you email, note or text message when a coworker has helped you, or a contractor has done a good job. You’re then essentially redefining the activity not as a “networking” activity but as a “conscientiousness” activity.
Try starting with a list of 5-6 strengths and 1-3 weaknesses. Write them down in 2 columns, and then draws some arrows from the strengths to the weaknesses where you think you could potentially apply a strength to a weakness. You don't need to be 100% sure how you're going to do it just yet. Go with your gut of what you think might be applicable.
You can also do this exercise with your accountability partner.
Don't worry if it's hard to think of your strengths at first. Write down as many as you can think of and then add to your list over the next couple of weeks. Just notice tasks you do competently and ask yourself what strengths your utilizing to do that.
5. USE TOOLS
A number of tools exist to help you work through your weaknesses. The chronically disorganized often take advantage of calendars, to-do lists and spreadsheets. If putting projects off is your main problem, create a to-do list for each day.
Train yourself to use the tools. A calendar is only helpful if you consult it regularly and write down your meetings and plans in it.
6. MINIMIZE YOUR WEAKNESS
To minimize your weaknesses, try to reshape what you do, so that it doesn’t require using your weakness, but using your strength. This may mean reassigning your job description, finding a complementary partner to compensate for your weakness, hiring the skills you lack, or adopt ways to work as a team so that each person can draw on their strengths.
7. PROACTIVE COPING
Be very prepared. Sometimes the best defense against a weakness is to overcompensate with excellent preparation. Proactive coping is when one reduces the stress of some difficult challenge by anticipating what it will be like and preparing for how one is going to cope with it.
Need to pitch a customer or investor for the first time? Learn all you can about the person you're pitching and then practice your pitch a few times on your colleagues or friends.
Similar techniques can apply in other situations.
8. ACCESS YOURSELF REGULARLY
To make progress, you need to monitor how well you are overcoming your weakness. Use your journal to keep records.
Your accountability partner will also play a critical role in evaluating your progress. If you are proceeding according to plan, congratulate yourself. Otherwise, you need to assess what factors are hindering you and make adjustments.
Also realize that progress will take time. Rome was not built in a single day. Neither will you overcome your weakness in one day or perhaps even in one week. Habits and traits take time to become ingrained and can take time to be undone. Be aggressive in your goals but be realistic as well.
9. TURN YOUR WEAKNESS INTO STRENGTH.
Not a good public speaker. Be an intimate communicator instead.
Some weakness can be turned into strengths. A shy person can turn shyness into a strength by being a good listener.
Think of how you can turn your weakness into a strength, look for the positives in your weakness. Necessity is the mother of invention. If not having a skill you need is a problem for you, you can be sure it's a problem for others as well.
So think about ways you can help both yourself and others compensate for your deficiency. Your weakness could wind up leading you to a successful new venture.
10. FINALLY SEEK FOR PROFESSIONAL HELP.
When all else fails, seek professional help. Some serious weakness such as substance abuse may require professional help. Also some issues may require medical counseling. When your car develops a problem, you quickly take it to a mechanic, but most people are reluctant to submit to professional, when they know they have issues that could crash their life one day.
Remember, you are not a truck, you are a high performance, priceless sports car. If you discover any issue that needs to be addressed by a professional, don’t hesitate to seek professional care. You have one life, make sure nothing denies you the opportunity to live the best life possible.
So here you have the 10 techniques you can use to overcome your weakness. Before we end this course, I will like to remind you that no matter how strong your weakness is, you can still overcome it, and become great.
Many great men and women struggled with great weaknesses and became great in the process.
Thomas Edison had difficulty with speech and words, and was partially deaf in one ear. Yet with all these conditions, he became one of the most prolific inventor of our time. His inventions include electric light, power utilities, sound recording, and motion pictures.
Bruce Willis suffered from severe stammering for the first 20 years of his life, yet he turned this to his advantage, and became a mega star.
Richard Branson had dyslexia, a learning disability in reading. Also his teachers believed he was lazy, and even Branson himself admitted to doing most of his work in bed, and waking late. Yet Richard Branson managed to overcome all these weaknesses, by relying on his core strengths, and became one of the richest people in the world.
Helen Keller was blind, yet she managed to learn the braille, overcame her blindness to become a great woman in history.
So you should know that no matter how strong your weakness appears, you will overcome it and still become great.
